A research project must for every Patna University teacher

PATNA: With a view to creating an environment of quality research, Patna University (PU) vice-chancellor Y C Simhadri called upon the teachers to take up research projects and get published papers in national and international journals. "Each teacher of the university must have at least one research project with him," he said.

Addressing a joint meeting of the postgraduate research council (PGRC) of all the faculties at PU geology department auditorium on Monday, Simhadri said a university is known not only for teaching but also for quality research leading to the societal development. Even though PU has got the best of teachers in the country, the university lags behind other national universities in the field of research. He said all the teachers should apply for research projects to various funding agencies like the UGC, CSIR, DST, ICSSR, etc, and conduct meaningful research. Funds would not be any constraint, he said.

Simhadri told the teachers that the university was striving hard to improve the infrastructure conducive to the growth of teaching and research. Internet and computer facilities were being provided to all the institutions and the PU central library was being modernized. Now, the researchers can have an access to any journal at a click of the mouse, he said.

Patna Science College principal U K Sinha pleaded for improving the infrastructure and appointment of teachers against vacant posts for promoting research activities. As teachers are already overloaded with teaching assignments, they have no time for research, he said.

PU social science faculty dean N K Chaudhary observed that so far teaching was the main preoccupation of PU teachers. Most of the research works carried out for PhD are trash having no societal relevance, he said and regretted that no faculty has been constituted in the last two decades, hampering meaningful research.

PU humanities faculty dean Amar Kumar Singh, education faculty dean Khagendra Kumar, commerce faculty dean B N Pandey, B N College principal P K Poddar, Patna Women's Training College principal Jessie George, PU geology department head M N Sinha and chemistry department head A K Ghosh suggested ways to improve the standards of research in the university.
